Prof. Dr. Jan Marcus

Assistant Professor of the

Education and Family Department

Research Topics and Working Areas

Jan Marcus examines empirical questions in the areas of health and education economics, with a particular focus on the evaluation of specific policies (e.g., G8 schooling reform, late-night ban on alcohol sales). His research projects combine relevant research questions with the newest methods from statistics and econometrics to allow for credible identification of causal effects.

Before joining DIW Berlin in September 2009, he studied Political and Administrative Science (Bachelor) as well as Economics (Master) in Konstanz and Istanbul. His work is accepted for publication in various international peer-reviewed journals (like Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Human Resources, and Labour Economics) and was awarded with the ALLBUS Young Scholar Award in 2010, the Best Paper Price at the Warsaw International Economic Meeting in 2012, and the German Economics Prize in 2018. Since 2013 he is fellow of the College for Interdisciplinary Educational Research and since October 2015 he holds an assistant professorship at the University of Hamburg.
