The aim of the project “Open ENergy TRansition ANalyses for a low-carbon Economy” is to develop, apply and disseminate an open, transparent and integrated modelling platform designed to assess low-carbon transition pathways in Europe. The platform will initially be populated with a suite of state-of-the-art modelling tools by the project partners that will process data derived from the multiple dimensions of the energy transition. The project will facilitate and improve dialogue between researchers, policy makers and industry during examination of the key issues linked to the transition.

DIW Team

DIW Berlin is primarily involved in two work packages:

  1. Case study on the long-term role of gas storage in Turkey and Germany: will it be beneficial in the future to use current natural gas storage facilities for synthetic gas that is produced from electrolysis and methanisation in a power-to-gas process that uses surplus renewable electricity?
  2. Evaluation of the coherence between regulation and modeling of the European energy sector: which relevant aspects are missing in the energy modeling? Which lessons learnt from energy modeling should be implemented in the energy sector regulation?
