   Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
der SOEP-Datensatz 1996 wird gegenwärtig mit zahlreichen nutzerInnenfreundlichen Neuerungen verschickt (vgl. NEWSLETTER Nr. 37 vom Juli 1997). Sollten Sie den neuen Datensatz noch nicht geordert haben, können Sie dies mit dem beigehefteten Bestellschein nachholen.
Als besonderes "Highlight" können wir in dieser Ausgabe auf das neugestaltete SOEP-Info hinweisen, das als zentrales zweisprachiges, interaktives Dokumentationsinstrument für das SOEP (und GSOEP) besonders anwendungsfreundlich auf unserer Homepage im Internet ausgebaut wurde. Es enthält nicht nur die bereits bekannte Variablen-Liste samt Grundauszählungen sowie die Item-Korrespondenzliste, die Sie für Ihre konkreten Arbeiten brauchen, sondern ab sofort auch einen Programm-Generator. Ebenfalls enthalten ist eine allgemeine Kurzbeschreibung des SOEP-Datensatzes, die jedeR AnfängerIn lesen sollte.
Weiterhin wagen wir einen für uns ungewöhnlichen Versuch: Unsere internationale Zusammenarbeit hat zur Anregung geführt, zumindest testweise eine "SOEP-Devotionalien Box" zu eröffnen (siehe in diesem NEWSLETTER). Erstes Produkt ist eine SOEP-Uhr, die Sie bei uns bestellen können. Über die Übersendung Ihrer Meinung hierzu sowie weiterer Anregungen und Wünsche für eine eventuelle Ausweitung unseres Angebots (z.B. um einen Coffee-Mug) würden wir uns sehr freuen.

   SOEP-Info bietet extensive Suchmöglichkeiten und detaillierte Informationen zu den SOEP-Variablen. Von der Projektgruppe wurde jetzt das bisherige SOEP-Info durch die Bereitstellung neuer Features weiterentwickelt. SOEP-Info ist nach wie vor als DOS-Applikation auf Ihrem PC nutzbar, die jeweils aktuellste Version mit den neuesten Verbesserungen erreichen Sie jedoch am besten interaktiv über unsere Homepage im WWW. click here
Mit einer via SOEP-Info interaktiv erstellten Variablenliste können NutzerInnen Häufigkeitsauszählungen, eine Item Korrespondenzliste und neuerdings sogar SPSS, SAS, TDA (6.1) und Stata (4.0) Kommandodateien generieren (!!). Das bedeutet, daß Sie durch einfaches Anklicken von Variablen im SOEP-Info automatisch auch kompliziertere Kommando-Dateien für Quer- und Längsschnittanalysen erhalten, die Informationen aus verschiedenen Dateien miteinander verbinden. Diese Kommando-Dateien können Sie in Ihr jeweiliges Software-Paket kopieren und dort direkt laufen lassen.

SOEP-Personalia

   SOEP-Projektleiter Gert Wagner hat einen Ruf an die Georg-August-Universität Göttingen abgelehnt und den "gemeinsamen Ruf" der Europa Universität Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder (EUV) und des DIW auf den seit dem 1.9.1997 neu geschaffenen Lehrstuhl für Volkswirtschaftslehre, insb. empirische Wirtschaftsforschung und Wirtschaftspolitik angenommen. Wagner leitet damit auch wieder hauptberuflich das SOEP am DIW.

Johannes Schwarze vertritt ab dem 1.10.1997 die Professur für Volkswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Sozialpolitik an der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg.

John Haisken-De New ist von Oktober 1997 bis März 1998 als Visiting Assistant Professor am Department of Economics an der Syracuse University/New York tätig. Gleichzeitig wird er am Center for Policy Research (CPR) in Syracuse an der Weiterentwicklung der English-Language Public-Use-Version des SOEP (GSOEP) arbeiten.

       
 

NEW SERVICE: Interactive SOEP-Info Allows Now to Create Command Files

   SOEP-Info on our homepage provided on WWW is an interactive system with extensive search capabilities that provides you with detailed information on the variables in the SOEP dataset. By interactively creating lists of variables in SOEP-Info, the user can then output frequencies information, item correspondence, and even generated SPSS, SAS, TDA (6.1) and Stata (4.0) command files based on the variables you have selected. You can easily collect variables in a special basket via mouse-click and SOEP-Info creates automatically a command file. After the selections of the variables and getting the command file, you only need to copy it into the software program you use and run it.
As "frames" and JavaScript 1.1 are used, SOEP-Info-WWW requires Netscape (3.01) or higher versions of Netscape.

For all users who are unfamiliar with SOEP-Info here a short summary of questions the program answers:

  • What variables are present, in which files, and for which years?
  • What are all the variables in any given data file?
  • What variables are available on the topic "X"?
  • I know what a variable is called in one year, but what is it called in all other years?
  • Is the information that I want available at the person, household, or spell level?
  • Have the codings of the variables changed over time?
  • What are the frequencies of variables of interest to me?
  • What does an SPSS / SAS / TDA / STATA retrieval look like for the variables of interest to me ?
  • Do I have enough observations to carry out my project?

Proceedings of the 2nd International GSOEP User Conference Available

GSOEP Personnel

   SOEP director Gert Wagner declined an offer from the Georg-August-University in Göttingen and accepted the joint offer from the German Institute of Economic Research (DIW) and European University Viadrina (EUV) at Frankfurt/Oder for the new Chair for Empirical Economics and Economic Policy, beginning September 1, 1997. This allows him to focus again his major activities at the DIW as the director of the SOEP.

Johannes Schwarze will take the post of an Associate Professor of Economics, especially Social Policy, from the Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg from October 1, 1997. He will remain at the GSOEP group in the DIW as well.

John Haisken-De New will be visiting assistant professor at the Department of Economics at the Syracuse University/New York, from October 1997 to March 1998. He will work as well at the Center for Policy Research (CPR) in Syracuse to make further developments for the English-Language Public-Use-Version of the GSOEP.

1997 Summer Workshop - A Huge Success

   The 1997 GSOEP-PSID summer workshop was held at Syracuse University July 8th through July 12th. Everyone who took part in the workshop agrees that it was a huge success. There were a total of 21 participants representing a number of different countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands and a number of different disciplines including economics, sociology, geography, demography, and psychology.

Sandy Hofferth (University of Michigan) talked about the PSID and its new immigrant sample. The immigrant sample will include individuals who immigrated to the United States after 1968. GSOEP users might want to start thinking about cross-national comparisons of immigrant groups in the United States and Germany.

Joachim Frick (DIW) led the morning sessions and introduced participants to the fine points of working with the GSOEP and Gert Wagner (DIW) discussed weighting issues in the data. Barbara Butrica (Syracuse University) introduced participants to the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File. After lunch, participants had the opportunity to break up into small computer sessions for more "hands-on" work with the datasets.

Afternoon sessions adjourned after paper presentations from researchers using the GSOEP and the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File. Jim Witte (Northwestern University) presented a paper on the use of job creation and training programs in Germany following reunification. Jim also incorporated into his talk many tips on using SPSS with the GSOEP.

Other presenters included Richard Burkhauser, Tom Dunn, Jan Ondrich, and Robert Weathers all from Syracuse University. Ann Wicks (Syracuse University) organized presentation materials, travel, hotel, and dinner reservations for workshop participants. The workshop concluded with a barbecue at Richard Burkhauser's house that included an abundance of food and drink.

       
 

PSID Tax Burdens

   Users of the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File probably noticed that the variable for the PSID 1992 Household Tax Burden was missing from the previous release. The reason for this is that the PSID no longer has the time or resources to generate this variable. Barbara Butrica, Don Marples, and Daniel Feenberg are working together to simulate PSID tax burdens using the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) TAXSIM Model. These variables will be available in the next release of the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File.
       
 

New Releases of the English Language Version of the GSOEP and the Equivalent Data File

   The anticipated release date for the GSOEP 1984-1996 English language version and the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File 1980-1995 is January 1998.
CD-ROMs containing these data will be automatically sent, free of charge, to users who received the GSOEP 1984-1995 English language version last year. Contact Syracuse at the address below if your mailing address has changed.
For new users, the dissemination of these data is a two step process. First it is necessary to sign a contract with the original producer of the data, the DIW. After the contract is signed, contact Syracuse to receive the data. The charge for the CD-ROM is $125.

   A list of working papers and publications using the English language version of the GSOEP and the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File is now available on-line. As of September 1, 1997 over 210 papers are listed on our website at

   Karsten Hank is visiting from the University of Bochum through the end of this year. While here Karsten is researching the employment of domestic help in private households.
       
 

Recent Conference Presentations

   Richard Burkhauser (Syracuse University), Tom Juster (University of Michigan), and Jules Theeuwes (Leiden University) organized The International Health and Retirement Surveys Conference in Amsterdam held August 7-8, 1997. The conference included empirical research papers on aging topics. Gert Wagner (DIW) and Douglas Wolf (Syracuse University) and also Regina Riphahn (University of Munich) and David M. Blau (University of North Carolina) presented papers using the GSOEP data.
Richard Burkhauser (Syracuse University) and Robert Clark (North Carolina State University) organized a symposium on longitudinal data sets at the 1997 World Congress of Gerontology in Adelaide, Australia held August 19-23, 1997 that included a paper by Burkhauser and Amy Crews (Syracuse University) using the PSID-GSOEP Equivalent File.
